The Armscor Rock Island Armory VR60 Shotgun melds AR-15/M16 rifle looks, features and functionality into a semi-automatic 5+1 capacity 12-gauge shotgun. And why not? This means one benefits from the extraordinary modularity, ease of use and familiarity with AR types.

Despite the resemblance to the standard M16 rifle, there are actually many details that jump out after a brief reflection. The contoured barrel is 20” long, and it is fronted by a choke. The choke tube set has four Beretta Benelli style chokes: Mobile, Full, Modified and Improved Cylinder. The carrying handle has a slightly different angle. The stock looks like a standard A2 but has a more ergonomically designed cheek rest that rises in both sides and evokes a Monte Carlo stock silhouette.

The enlarged polymer handguard doesn’t encase a magazine tube, but rather a support tube that houses the conventional gas-operated action and the return spring. And instead of using a tube magazine, the ammo is in a detachable all-steel box mag.

The handguard is all one piece with up and down triangular lightening ports on both upper flanks, a Picatinny rail along the top, another one at bottom, and two shorter molded 7-slot Picatinny rail sections at 3 and 9 o’clock. The lower flanks have molded oval grip serrations.

The VR60 aluminum receiver is black anodized for durability and chambered for 3" Magnum loads.

It has a removable A2-type carry handle that slides off. When removed, it reveals a “flat-top” with the requisite integrated MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail underneath. The front bead sight is atop a sight post and is elevation adjustable. It’s paired with a rear iron sight that you can knob adjust to flip between aperture sight to a standard sight and back. A knob below it adjusts for windage.

Its magazine release, manual safety and more are above the trigger/trigger guard on the gun’s left side, located about where you’d expect them to be on an M16.

The VR60 features a polymer buttstock that has an integrated three finger groove pistol grip and that continues forward to include the magwell. It’s all one big polymer part. The grip has a nice palmswell that works really well. And the totality is backed by an excellent thick, black, recoil mitigating rubber buttpad. You also get sling attachment points in front and back. Overall length is 39”. The VR60’s empty weight is 7.4 pounds.

Armscor’s North American branch is based in Pahrump, Nevada. It imports many guns from its parent operations located in the Philippines but the VR60 is Made in Turkey by Derya Arms.
