The CZ-USA 75 SP-01 Phantom semi-automatic 9 mm Luger is largely a polymer framed version of the well-known steel framed CZ SP-01 Tactical. The gun has an eye-popping 18+1 capacity.

But let’s back up for a moment and talk origin story. CZ is short for Ceská Zbrojovka (meaning Czech Armory), a company established in 1936 in the historic Bohemian city of Strakonice in the southwestern part of the Czech Republic. CZ has spent decades making and repairing civilian and military arms and some aircraft parts too. Thus the CZ-USA 75 SP-01 Phantom is made in the Czech Republic and imported by CZ-USA of Kansas City, Kansas.

The CZ-USA 75 SP-01 Phantom is a member of the CZ 75 family that was first designed in 1975. The family’s shared features include double-stack magazines, slide-in-frame architecture, three dot sighting systems, ergonomic grips and controls, hammer forged barrels, etc. More than a million have been sold since first built.

The slide is unusual in that it has been cut down and contoured more toward the barrel, giving it a lower profile than many of its semi-automatic peers. It lacks from serrations, and even the rear serrations are short vertical cuts rather than the usual longer diagonal ones.

The 4.6” long barrel is cold hammer forged while overall length is 8.15”. Weight comes in a 29.4 ounces, which is substantially lighter than its steel sibling and which makes it easy to carry for extended periods of time. Height and width aren’t available as of this writing, but the similar steel frame SP-01 tactical measures at 5.79” and 1.46” respectively.

Atop the slide, the Phantom has three dot luminescent phosphorous sights. They are nothing fancy, but they are well suited for daylight conditions.

Under the muzzle lives a five slot Picatinny rail for red dot lasers and other accessories. A side benefit is that its weight helps reduce muzzle flip for faster follow on shots and reduces felt recoil.

The trigger guard is fronted by a 90 degree bottom corner and a high undercut that leads to the magazine release, which has a unique keyhole shape. SP-1 has a double-action/single-action trigger.

The beavertail is extended, elegant and curves upward. There are other curves too, such as the subtle bulge at the bottom of the mainspring housing as it approaches the magwell and its corresponding forward curve at the grip’s bottom front.

The grip panels are integrated rather than interchangeable. In contrast, the backstrap is changeable, and it has a lanyard loop at the bottom. Both the frontstrap and backstrap are checkered for a good grip. Inside resides the high capacity 18 round double stack metal magazine. The gun comes new with two.

The SP-01 Phantom has been discontinued for some years and reappeared later and was then discontinued again, but it is still the Czech Army’s current sidearm.
