Wow! The Howa Oryx bolt-action rifle lineup is a showcase of modernist design punctuated by its standout full monolithic aluminum and polymer Oryx chassis sourced from MDT.

The gun can be had with Howa’s MiniAction in .300 AAC Blackout, .223 Rem, 7.62x39 and 6.5 Grendel. This has a standard profile barrel that’s 22” long in a gun that’s 41.5” overall and weighs 6 pounds. A heavy barrel threaded muzzle 20” barrel that puts the gun at 39.5” and 6.4 pounds is also available for all four. These variants use a 10-round AICS-pattern magazine.

The Howa Oryx is works with Howa’s slightly longer, heavier and longer cycling short action in 6 mm Creedmoor, 6.5 Creedmoor and .308 Win. These have a 20” barrel, an overall length of 39.5” and weigh 6.4 pounds. A 24” long heavy barrel threaded muzzle variant is 43.5” long overall and weighs 7 pounds. These variants work with 5-round AICS-pattern magazines.

The Oryx chassis itself is affordable and elegant. It’s also a paragon of efficient simplicity: the barrel, action, etc., drop in and are fastened with just two bolts that leave the barrel free floating. The Oryx chassis is a large 32.25” long assembly that includes the forend, receiver bottom, and adjustable stock. It’s made of MIL-Spec Type III hard anodized aluminum and has polymer side panels, etc. The stock is a nice-looking boot-shaped affair. Comb height and length of pull (LOP) are both adjustable. LOP can be set from 13.25" to 15", and the entire assembly weighs just 4.2 pounds.

You can get the Oryx stock three colors: FDE, olive drab green and gray.

The gun’s bolt is a two-lug design made of forged steel with an integrated bolt arm. The receiver is also made of forged steel and the barrels are hammer forged. Near the base of the bolt arm is a three-position safety and a red-dot safety indicator.

The gun’s two-stage curved zero creep Howa Activated Controlled Trigger (HACT) has crisp, clean, breaks and is seemingly universal among the Howa rifles. All this sophistication combines to give the gun a sub-MOA rating. Thus, with factory or premium ammunition, it can shoot a group of three rounds within an inch at up to 100 yards.

Howa USA is based in Reno, Nevada. It’s an importer of guns and a subdivision of Legacy Sports International. Howa USA imports its guns from Howa Machinery, Ltd. in Japan, a firm established as Showa Heavy Industries, Ltd., in the late 1930s as a defense contractor to make aircraft parts, rifles and more. In 1941, it merged with Toyoda Loom Works, Ltd., and the name was amended to Howa Heavy Industries, Ltd. During World War II, the company made the Arisaka rifle, aircraft components, artillery and machineguns. Post-war, it made a variety of weapons for the Japanese Self-Defense Forces and entered the US market in the 1950s where it has sold firearms ever since.

This fine firearm comes with a lifetime guarantee and is made in Howa’s modern factory in Japan.
