The Israeli Weapons Industries (IWI) Tavor 7 is a 7.62 NATO / 7.62 × 51 mm caliber semi-automatic bullpup gun.

IWI is Israeli and has strong connection to that country’s warriors, so it’s perhaps no surprise that the IWI Tavor 7 is named after Mount Tabor, a historic and holy mountain in Israel. Given Mount Tabor’s size, it’s ironic the Tavor 7 is very compact, which makes them so popular.

That the Tavor 7 is a bullpup means the gas piston action is behind the trigger, helping keep the firearm compact.

The stock is reinforced polymer. The gun comes without sights but can accept them on its MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail along its crest. Below the muzzle is a shorter MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail that comes with a removable rail cover. There are also a couple of M-LOK slots at 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock positions.

The Tavor 7’s barrel is 16.5” long with four grooves and a 1 to 12” RH twist. It’s chrome lined, cold hammer forged and made of CrMoV steel alloy. This brings overall length to 28.7”. Fronting the barrel is a two chamber muzzle brake. An optional 20” barrel is also available.

Above the muzzle is a grooved cylindrical knob that sticks out the front. It’s the gas block regulator and has four settings: Off, Suppressor, Adverse and Regular. Regular is for normal firing. Adverse is for when there is fouling or short-stroking. Suppressor partially deactivates the gas, but still cycles the gun. Off allows the gun to be used in simple bolt-action mode. To change the setting, simply stick a punch or an unfired 7.62 NATO round into the two holes in the cylinder and turn as needed.

The buttstock is sizeable and not skeletonized because it houses important things like the recoil mechanism. All this shifts the center of gravity toward the back of the gun. What the stock lacks is a butt pad, making do with a thin butt plate instead. This plate opens to give access to the recoil mechanism.

For portability, the Tavor 7 has two swivel mounts per side. Each side also has a safety selector and magazine release. The gun comes factory set for right-hand users but can be reconfigured for left-hand use as well.

The glove-friendly hand grip assembly extends the leading line of the trigger guard down to the same level as the bottom of the pistol grip then turns roughly 135 degrees to meet it. The pistol grip itself is nicely thought out with two distinct finger recesses and a lightly swelled backstrap.

The modular Tavor hand grip can be swapped out with a standard pistol grip with traditional trigger guard. This Tavor comes standard with a 20-round polymer and steel AR-10A/SR magazine and weighs 9 pounds.

The Tavor 7 comes in three colors: black, flat dark earth, and olive drab green.
