The Kimber KHX Custom is a full-size single-stack semi-automatic available in either 9+1 capacity 9 mm or 8+1 .45 ACP. In a world of M1911 guns, leave it to Kimber to design one wielding memorable looks, red fiber optic front sights, hexagonal slide serrations, red laser G10 grips and more. The gun’s slide and frame are both machined of stainless steel and covered in Kimber’s tough matte dark gray KimPro II finish.

While the “Custom” moniker sounds like it refers to the trim level, it’s simply Kimber parlance for Full Size. Thus, the main dimensions are fairly standard. The barrel is 5” long. Height is 5.25”, length is 8.7” and width is 1.28”. Overall weight is 38 ounces.

The slide has front and back serrations. But you will love that they aren’t the usual forward leaning diagonal ones, but a cluster of deeply recessed hexagons. Kimber calls the arrangement stair-step. Atop the slide is a bright red fiber optic front sight that will give you fast target acquisition times. The rear sight has a curved ramp leading edge and white dots in back. The sight radius in between is 6.8”.

The KHX Custom has a loop hammer, an upturned beavertail and below it, a grip safety.

The KHX Custom’s gun barrel is also machined of stainless steel. It’s match grade and has a 1 to 16” LH twist for both 9 mm and .45 ACP. Kimber hasn’t skimped on the details. For instance, the gun has a full-length guide rod for smoother slide movements and improved longevity. It also features a 12-pound recoil spring for the 9 mm or a 16-pound one for the .45 ACP.

The trigger guard is a lovely oval. Inside, the double-oval ported curved trigger is made of premium aluminum and is factory-set to 4.0 to 5.0 pounds.

Hogue has a penchant for styling impressive-looking grips. The ones this Kimber sports are no exception. They’re hexagonal snakeskin patterned Hogue Magrip G10 polymer grips that have the red laser enhancement atop the right grip on both the .45 ACP and 9 mm models. Furthermore, the grip’s frontstrap has Stiplex texturing and the backstrap has additional Magrip texturing too.

While the frame is the same as that of the shorter barrel/shorter slide KHX Pro, the Custom manages one extra round in .45 ACP mode thanks to an extended magazine well, which also happens to be beveled for easy engagement. Thus the Custom’s has either a 9-round 9 mm magazine or an 8-round .45 ACP magazine. In both cases, the magazine is a single-stack design that shoves easily into the beveled magwell.

The KHX Custom also has a KHX Custom OR (Optics Ready) model. It is like the standard model except its slide is already cut open to accept optic plates. Thus you can integrate various red dot reflex sights from Leupold, Trijicon and Vortex. It also differs in two other details. It also has a smaller two white dot rear sight co-witness optic plate already fitted, and the right grip lacks the red laser.

The Kimber KHX Custom is made in Yonkers, New York, and is thus Made in USA.
