Luger Design

Patented in 1898 Georg J. Luger, the Luger pistol is one of the first semi-automatic pistols developed. The Luger was designed with a jointed-arm toggle-lock action contrary to the common slide action of almost all other semi-automatic pistols at the time. This toggle-lock action uses the recoil momentum to extract the casing from the chamber and eject it from the firearm – all in a fraction of a second. This action is best with high pressure cartridges like the 45 ACP round, because lower pressure cartridges do not produce sufficient energy for the action to function properly. The Luger also inspired the development of the 9x19mm Parabellum cartridge.

The Historic Use of the Luger

The Luger is best known for its use by the Germans in WWI and WWII, but was also the choice of the Swiss Army in 1900 and the Imperial German Navy in 1904. Throughout its life, the Luger has been field tested by the US Army and was adopted as the official side arm of the Bolivian Army in 1908. Captured Lugers were a prized collection for the Allied soldiers during both World Wars. German soldiers soon learned this and began rigging landmines and booby-traps with discarded Lugers as bait.

The Luger Today

Today, the Luger pistol is a popular collector’s firearm. In 1923, Stoeger, Inc. obtained the right to the name “Luger” and began importing German-made Parabellum pistols to the US. Over the past 70 years, Stoeger, Inc. has produced a variety of pistols under the “Luger” name. In 1991, the Texas based firm Aimco, Inc. remade the classic Luger model under the name “Mitchell” and Stoeger quickly bought the rights to market this new pistol. Stoeger’s current offering is named the “American Eagle” and refers to the roll-stamped eagle above the chamber.

The Luger Rifle

Georg Luger adapted his toggle-lock action into a self-loading rifle for the German military, however only a few prototypes were ever built. sellers update their auction listings frequently, so if you're looking to buy a Luger pistol or Luger, check back often.
