The New England Firearms Handi-Rifle break-action single-shot covers 44 Mag, 357 Mag, 444 Marlin, 223 Rem, 243 Win, 270 Win and 30/06 Springfield and more. It is the same as the H&R 1871 Handi-Rifle. Both were produced at the same time and in the same factory but branded both ways. The latest production is under the H&R 1871 brand. Those models include the Synthetic, Stainless, Superlight Handi-Rifle, and Handi-Grip models. In the past, there have also been wooden stock models.

The Handi-Rifle was branded as all-weather and tough. It was also affordable, making it a great entry-level gun. In fact, there was even a Youth model or two. By the time it got to synthetic stocks, the Handi-Rifles were using high-density polymer forends and stocks for excellent durability.

The guns had sling swivel studs, recoil pads, smooth actions and were designed with as few parts as possible to mitigate maintenance. For safety, they had a Transfer Bar safety that should practically eliminate accidental firing when a gun is dropped.

The Synthetic Handi-Rifle has a synthetic forend and stock. You have two caliber choices: 22 Hornet and .45/70 Govt. This standard model has a 22” barrel, 14.25” length of pull, 38” overall length and weighs 7 pounds. The gun sports a wonderful matte black finish over the barrel, receiver, forend, stock and everything else. Sighting is via a ramped front sight coupled to a fully adjustable rear sight. Bonus: the receiver is tapped for a scope mount.

You can get the same in 44 Mag, 357 Mag, 444 Marlin, 223 Rem, 243 Win, 270 Win and 30/06 Sprg. The main difference is the raised cheek Monte Carlo stock. The scope mount rail is standard and there are no iron sights.

The Handi-Grip HandiRifle is anchored around the new black Handi-Grip high-density polymer stock. Its engaging contours encircle the ambidextrous thumbhole. It features molded forend checkering and molded grip checkering. It has a scope mount rail, spans a great range of calibers and has 22”, 24” and 28” length barrels.

In 22", choices are 243 Win., 308 Win and 45-70 Gov't. Move up two inches to the 24", and choices are 204 Ruger, 223 Remington and 22-250 Remington. Both the 22” barrel and 24” barrel guns span 38” overall. Finally, the longest at 26" is the 25-06 Remington, which measures 42” overall. The scope mount rail is standard and there are no iron sights.

Finally, the Superlight Handi-Rifle Compact has smaller dimensions and is scope-friendly. It’s available in three calibers: 243 Win, 223 Rem and 243 Win. The 243 Win comes with a factory-mounted bore-sighted 3-9x32 scope. All have ramp front sights paired with adjustable rear ones, and their receivers are drilled and tapped for scope mounts. Key metrics include the 20” barrel, 11 3/4" length of pull, 33” overall length and 5 1/3-pound weight.
