The centerfire Winchester 1892 lever-action repeating rifle had 12-round, 15-round and 17-round versions. You could get it chambered for .32-20, .38-40 and .44-40. It was a bit of a follow up to the 1873, which Winchester marketed as “The Gun that Won the West”. The Winchester 1873 launched in 1873; the Winchester 1892 launched in, you guessed it, 1892.

The 1892 was also astonishingly popular. In fact, Winchester built over a million by the time production ended five decades later. It was often shown in movies, etc., from an earlier time period during which it didn’t really exist.

There was a takedown version Winchester started making several years into production. You just had to unscrew a bolt from in front by the muzzle), but then it came apart nicely into two major halves.

Winchester recaptures the original’s magic with a lineup of seven 1892 copies still called Winchester 1892s. They are the Model 1892 Deluxe Trapper Takedown Case Hardened, Model 1892 125th Anniversary Sporter, Model 1892 Deluxe Octagon, Model 1892 Large Loop Carbine, Model 1892 Deluxe Octagon Takedown, Model 1892 Carbine and Model 1892 Short Rifle.

All share plenty of characteristics. One of these is the top tang safety. The guns are seemingly all steel or wood. For instance, the barrel, receiver, trigger, trigger guard are all steel. The forearm and stock are American black walnut of different grades depending on the model. There is a variety of stock profiles, barrel profiles (round vs. octagonal), and more.

You can get the first five in .357 Magnum, .44 Remington Magnum, .44-40 Winchester or .45 Colt. The last two you can get in only in .357 Magnum, .44 Remington Magnum or .45 Colt, but not .44-40 Winchester.

The lightest of these seven is the Model 1892 Deluxe Trapper Takedown Case Hardened. For starters, it only weighs 5 pounds 14 ounces. It’s light thanks above all to its short 16” barrel, which contributes to a 33.5” overall length. The full-length tube magazine has room for 7 rounds. Drop at comb is 1 1/8” and drop at heel is 1 3/4" while length of pull is 12 3/4".

The barrel, receiver, etc., have an elegant blued finish. The black walnut stock is Grade III/IV and oil finished. There’s nice 20 LPI checkering cut into the grip areas. And there is an elegantly shaped crescent metal buttplate in back.

The 1892 apex is the Model 1892 Deluxe Octagon Takedown. You can get it in four calibers, all with a 24” barrel, 12.75” length of pull and 41.5” overall length. Drop at comb is 1 1/8” and drop at heel is 1 3/4". The gun weighs 7.0 pounds and has an 11-round capacity in its full-length tube magazine.

The receiver, forearm cap, buttplate and lever are all color case finished, and the chamber is nicely polished. The gun comes standard with a Marble Arms gold bead sight in front paired with a semi-buckhorn sight in back. However, Winchester thoughtfully drills and taps the gun’s tang in case you want to install a peep sight. The barrel has a full octagonal contour (cross section) and is polished blued. The stock is high grade (Grade V/VI) American Black Walnut that has a nice lustrous oil finish.

The Winchester 1892 has been around in some form or fashion over 120 years. Tune in another 120 years from now to see if it’s still in production. Don’t be surprised if it is.
